Art

Subject Overview

Art is journey of discovery, learning new things and consolidating existing skills. Pupils are encouraged to develop their artistic skills on an individual basis and to work as a team where appropriate.

Art encourages pupils look at the art of other cultures across the world. This helps develop skills that are necessary to engender an understanding of, and respect and support for cultural differences.

It also helps an individual’s ability to form and articulate opinions and to think critically.

Art can teach pupils about their surroundings. It allows us to imagine, create and reflect our ideas in a visual representation of our world.

Homework/Assessment

From Years 7 to 9 the Department sets up to half an hour homework every fortnight. Each group has homework detailing when each piece is set and to be given in. The period allocated for completion gives the pupil flexibility for research, planning his/her time or resolving any problems before the completion date. . The sketchbook is used in the classroom and for homework. At the end of each unit the pupils’ work is assessed and with their teacher the pupils will set themselves targets in order to improve their work.

At GCSE/BTEC level homework is set weekly. Allpupils will be encouraged to carry out research using sketchbooks, visual records, collections and preparatory studies as part of their course work. Pupils are expected to look at the work of artists, designers and crafts people and use this in their own work.
